Credit Union for bad credit folk?

I have bad credit (unpaid medical bills, other youthful mistakes, sux to be me). I'd like to dump my current bank and join a credit union for several reasons but when I tried to join BECU they turned me away. Are there any credit unions locally that are more lenient with us pitiful, dirty and shameful bad credit people?

Sucks that BECU turned you down - maybe try Express Credit Union? They focus on low-income individuals and families, and if you can open an account with them you can use the Co-op shared branching to make deposits to your account at other credit unions.

If Express doesn't approve you ask a manager for help - they might have some discretion to help certain individuals, or might be able to suggest certain things you can do to improve your credit record.

My credit was pretty crappy for awhile, but after 7 years the unpaid bills fall off - as long as you don't pay on them at all. If you make payments you start the 7 year cycle all over, so keep that in mind. I never saved up enough money to pay mine off & had to wait.

I've been with BECU for awhile, have been paying all my bills on time for about 6 years now, and I just got approved by BECU for their visa card this year.

Credit unions have to be even more picky about new customers and lending, etc. than big mega banks because their profit margin is very small and they don't absorb defaults like a larger bank can. They must be very careful. I know I've joined employee credit unions in my past and never was approved for car loans through them because my credit score wasn't in the 700s. They offer very favorable interest rates, but you have to have sterling credit to take advantage of them.

In fact, you might have trouble getting an account at another regular bank if you're in financial hot water. I'd advise you to stay put until your credit report looks better. I think it may be better to have an account at a bank that you hate than not having one and not being able to get one.

I don't know much about Ally Bank (www.ally.com), but I've heard some good things about them insofar as being more lenient in accepting new customers. Some, however, don't like the idea of an online bank, but Ally does offer some good things like free checking.

Sorry to be such a downer, T. Hope things improve for you.
