What are your favorite Criterion Collection films?

We have a trial membership to Hulu Plus on the XBOX network and there are tons and tons of CC films to choose from. Planning on watching Kuroneko later on tonight.

Every Kurosawa movie they've done has been excellent. Ikiru and Yojimbo especially.

Their version of The Third Man is a completely restored version that had never been seen in the U.S. previously. The U.S. version had been modified to fit American, rather than British tastes.

The special features also include Graham Greene reading the book (actually, a "treatment", a novella based on his ideas for the script) in sync with the movie itself.

The BBS Story box set they put out last year is great. Head, Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, Last Picture Show, King of Marvin Gardens--pretty much the golden age of American independent film.

Peter Lorre as a super-creepy serial killer in Fritz Lang's first "talkie" is a great show.

"Billy Liar" starring Tom Courtenay and Julie Christie in her most luminous role. The opening sequence where she's walking down the street looking in the shop windows is magnificent, and the scene where they are hiding from the bullies in the bushes, and talking about the future, is my favorite scene in any movie.

LIZ: Sometimes I want to go away. It's not you, Billy. It's this town, it's the people we know. I--I don't like knowing everybody, I don't like becoming a part of things...you know what I mean?

BILLY: Yes, I do, Liz, I do!

LIZ: What I'd like to be is invisible. I'd like to be able to move around with having to explain anything.
