How should I go about watching Doctor Who?

Usually I like to start watching a new show from the beginning, but that doesn't really seem possible or feasible with Doctor Who, considering that it's been on for almost 800 episodes. For those who watch the show, where should I start? Does it matter? Should I jump around in the seasons? Thanks for the help!

I'd probably start with the Christopher Eccleston episodes. Depending on how quickly you watch, you can get current pretty fast. My wife hadn't seen any Doctor Who previously and had no problem picking it up from there.

Once you get into it, you can pretty much watch any of the old stories from the past.

A lot of people think Tom Baker is the greatest Doctor of all time. He's pretty much the only Doctor I really like. Baker performed the role from 1974 to 1981. If I were you, I would watch some of the Tom Baker episodes, then skip to David Tennant which starts in 2006 I believe? Sorry, but Christopher Eccelston (Tennant's predecessor) gives me the creeps. haha.

I was going to suggest that you try one self-contained episode/adventure.

My daughter started me on the first episode of season six, with Matt Smith as the Doctor and Amy Pond meeting him. While that did form a one adventure introduction to him and was a rollicking wild adventure...
I have recently stumbled on the superior episode "Blink" from 2007 starring David Tenent as The Doctor.

This 50 minute episode is written from the point of view of an innocent bistander who knows nothing about the Doctor at first, but gets drawn into an adventure to save herself and her friends while trying to aid this person "The Doctor" who is leaving her messages from 1969...

It's a beautifully edited peice, written by Steven Moffat (who is now the head writer)... and if you like this one, it forms a nice back-story to the recent two-parter "A Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone"... which I have just finished. (but before jumping into that, I really would start at the beginning of season six to see what they reference has come before with Amy Pond...)

OMG, my daughter has converted me into a Whovian!
