LGBT-themed books for kids, teens and adults

I need some suggestions for books with LGBT themes that may be used with children of all ages, and also teens and adults. This is for a (liberal) church library, to be used by Sunday school classes, youth groups and possibly for contemporary theology classes among adults. Thanks!

And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson is an excellent book for preschool to grade 3. It's a book about Roy and Silo, two male penguins who raise a penguin chick named Tango together. It introduces kids to the concept that some kids have two mommies or two daddies. I highly recommend it.

What a super awesome question! The Seattle Public Library's Teen Services Librarians have made a good list of queer fiction for teens, most of which would work for a wide age range.

I would particularly suggest The Vast Fields of Ordinary, which is somewhat unique in that it is not exactly a coming out story--more of a coming of age story about a gay kid.

Suicide Notes is timely in light of Dan Savage's "It Gets Better" project.

Totally Joe is a great book for younger (and older) audiences--perfect for middle school readers.

Parrotfish, about a transgender teen, is great because it's optimistic and funny.

How Beautiful the Ordinary, a collection of short stories, might be perfect for your purposes.  It emphasizes the diversity within the LGBTQ experience.  Some selections are more sexually explicit than others.

I liked that Pink accounted for how fluid sexuality can be, without writing off teenage lesbianism as "a phase."

I hope this is helpful.  Good luck!  If you need more information or book suggestions, feel free to contact a librarian any time.

    Cheers,

    Hayden

Boy Meets Boy is a fantastic YA book. Good writing, nothing you wouldn't want your mom to find out you're reading, and just enjoyable.

Try The Geography Club by Brent Hartinger, a Tacoma author. There are sequels as well. The story of a high school boy who wants to meet other gay teens. The solution is to start a club he thinks no one else will join and will give his friends a cover. Recommended for high school, I would not be afraid to give it to mature Jr. High students.
Flap Your Wings - by Eastman is a Beginner Book in the genre of The Cat in the Hat. I've seen it used successfully in a church with children to teach acceptance of LGBT people. The bird parents find something other than a baby bird hatching out of their egg and have to decide to love it anyway.

Have you checked out the Institute for Welcoming Resources website? If you look at the resources section they have a lot of book suggestions for different age groups and purposes, and they publish their own education & advocacy materials.

Also the God Loves Each One Ministry publishes some nice little pamphlets - I'm not Christian myself, but a friend of a friend of a friend told their story in the "Made in God's Image" brochure and I was really impressed that there is a group of Christians who accept trans people as they are. They have a brochure for kids too; might be worth checking out.

    Hi-

In addition to the wonderful suggestion below, I can also suggest some picture books that work for early to middle elementary children. Here are a few:

Mini Mia and her Darling Uncle by Pija Lindenbaum
A young girl does not want to share her beloved uncle with his new boyfriend, but soon discovers it might not be so bad after all.

In Our Mother's House by Patricia Polacco
A same sex couple show their children that their family is perfect just as it is.

    10,000 Dresses by Marcus Ewart
Bailey dreams of making dresses and then meets the perfect friend who can help make his dreams a reality.

    Hope this is useful!
