Suggestions on what to grow on a patio with limited light

I have a ground floor patio on the northwest corner so it's not going to have the best light. But there are two planter boxes and weeds and random flowers are growing prolifically. I have very limited gardening knowledge and am looking at trying to give it a shot again. Any ideas on good herbs and vegetables that would be suitable for a novice in this environment? Also if someone could direct me to a nice primer on prepping the beds and pots, that would be great.

These pictures are facing west at about 8am. The first one measures 6.5' x 2' and the second on is 8' x 2.

Seattle Tilth is going to be offering some workshops at Cal Anderson Park in June about container and apartment gardening. See the Cal Anderson Park Alliance website for details, or maybe the Seattle Tilth site as well.
