How long do bicycle helmets last?

Assuming they've never been in a crash- just the usual gentle wear.

    I go with the every 5 years rule of thumb, which is what the Snell foundation recommends:

    Two or three years.

    I'm not sure about gentle wear, as my helmets do get banged around a bit on my handlebars, hanging off my bag, and even get dropped now and then, but after two or three years the wear and tear results in at least once crack all the way through the styrofoam.

    Mind you, this is daily use including a lot of time spent sitting on my handlebars in the sun and rain and whatnot. If you're not using it daily and all the way through the winter, a helmet very well may last longer.

    The story changes dependent on when you bought it (manufacture date) and what materials have been used in its manufacture. I had an answer to give you and then perused available info out there to see that my knowledge was dated.
