  1 0 Two or three years. I'm not sure about gentle wear, as my helmets do get banged around a bit on my handlebars, hanging off my bag, and even get dropped now and then, but after two or three years the wear and tear results in at least once crack all the way through the styrofoam. Mind you, this is daily use including a lot of time spent sitting on my handlebars in the sun and rain and whatnot. If you're not using it daily and all the way through the winter, a helmet very well may last longer. The answer is that each helmet is designed to absorb an impact and protect your head. Therefore, if you DROP your helmet off a table, throw it, or in anyway impact it, you have lessened it's effectiveness. Following this line of thought, a bike safety helmet's life would also depend on how many impacts it has had, or, if it had ever been dropped. Hope this helps. Bicycle helmets are designed to absorb the impact by basically falling apart, so any sort of impact is going to lessen the structural integrity. I'm willing to take a little risk and not replace my helmet every time it's strapped on my bag and I set my bag down with less than a feather touch-landing. I wait until it starts to look beat up or I can actually see a crack.
