What do you put in your smoothies?

I'm in a smoothie rut. I like them tart, with greens, and no bananas.

How do you make yours?

I like them tart, too, and eagerly await your answers. My list of recipes is short, and when I need my smoothie most my brain is not functioning at its best (AM).

I usually end up throwing in a ton of frozen berries and fruit chunks. Frozen because the quality is always good (never any spoiled or soft bits), the freshness is usually as high as anything you can get even in the farmer's market, and it does wonders for the temp and texture without having to add ice. For extra tartness I put in a little splosh of vinegar.

A good basic one is lettuce and green grapes. Throw in some parsley too if you've got it.

Mine always include Nancy's plain non-fat yogurt (nice and tart!) and grapefruit juice for smoothie lube. I'll add frozen blueberries - partly for texture, as Fnarf noted - and whatever fresh fruit I have on hand: apple, stone fruit, other berries. No bananas here either, though fresh pineapple sometimes add a fantastic flavorful sweetness. Don't tell my hippie-hater friends, but I add ground flaxseed too (and actually enjoy the slightly nutty flavor).

This recipe makes a killer smoothie from a skeptical ingredient: Tofu. I know: I didn't believe it either, but this is the only smoothie I drink anymore. Bonus: It's ridiculously easy and delivers a better energy kick than caffeine!

    1/4-1/3 block of tofu
several strawberries to taste (like 8 or so)
    a dash of vanilla
    a squeeze of lemon
a dusting of sugar (or Sweet n Low, if that's what you're into)
whirl it up in the blender with just a few Tablespoons of water until it's as thick and creamy as you like it.
    eat with a spoon
    Delish!

I start with an orange juice base (or a fruity blend if I can get it. Frozen berries for flavor and tartness, but not too many because I find seeds annoying.

A spoonful of yogurt for creaminess. A touch of honey if I want the sweetness, but I usually go for tart.

A splash of flaxseed oil, because it's good for me, and I can't taste it in a smoothie at all.

You can also buy canned mango pulp at some stores (especially Indian grocery stores, for mango lassis), and that's a glorious thing to add.

We like to put frozen bananas, fruit, plain or vanilla yogurt, honey and a hemp or spirulina protein powder

I've never made the same smoothie twice. But the two ingredients I always include are plain yogurt and brewer's yeast.

I like lots of berries: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, marionberries. I also like orange juice and/or oranges, bananas, milk, yogurt and/or a little bit of ice cream sometimes. Some combo of the above ingredients.
