Why no more trees on East of 520?

The 520 bridge was closed over the weekend and when I drove over it this morning on my way to work realized that on the east side of the bridge they had ripped out almost all the Trees and foliage...why?? It looks so desolate now!

To make way for the expanded Highway 520 bridge and wider approaches. The State had to remove the trees to clear land for the upcoming construction of the new highway. A wider highway with more lanes is going to replace the current SR 520 and the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge, which has been operating beyond capacity and past it's intended useful design life for many years now. It's unfortunate that the trees had to go, but hopefully the benefit of wider safer highway and bridge will outweigh the loss of the trees.

Such is life in the Evergreen state. We're blessed with an abundance of trees, but sometimes we have to let some of them go to tree heaven in the name of progress.

People in the neighborhoods nearby were pretty pissed, but WSDOT says they are hoping to replant after the new bridge is built. See KOMO for more info.
