Where do you buy sour cherries?

I want to make a cherry pie! But I don't want Bing (sweet) cherries, I want pie cherries (sour cherries.) Where the heck do you find them? I can't even find them frozen.

I've seen frozen ones at a seemingly random selection of grocery stores--like, Viet Wah, Whole Foods, once at the Seward Park PCC, and the Beacon Hill Red Apple. It's unpredictable.
But pie cherries will be in fresh at the farmers market likely around late July this year--everything is running late. The stands I know that carry them: Little Wing (sells at Columbia City); Tonnemakers (sells at many markets); Mair Taki (U District, quite expensive).
There are also two kinds: Morellos and Montmorenceys. The latter are considered the best, but I strongly prefer the former. Morellos have a beautiful deep red color all the way through and taste sort of like cloves and allspice have been added.
Best of all, coerce a friend with a yard to plant a Surefire cherry tree. They produce quickly, are disease resistant for Western WA, and are Morello-types. And no, you can't have the ones on my tree.

I wait until Tonnemaker at the farmers market has them. Sometimes you can find them in the freezer section at Whole Paycheck. They are labeled "pie Cherries" Remlinger Farms sells them. 2# bags. But truly if you wait and ask the farmers, They are so much better.

You can usually find them frozen at the nicer markets. Metropolitan Market and Whole Foods both usually have them. Getting them fresh is a bit harder. They will show up at the farmers market for a couple of weeks, but then they're gone. And it's really hard to predict when they're going to be there. If you want them fresh, start going to the market now and talk to the fruit vendors. They can usually let you know the week before they will have them.

A couple of years back, I found a local guy who was selling them on Craigslist. He has a small farm and sells various sorts of produce that he grows--and his prices are great. He has only one cherry tree, so between me and another customer, we buy all he has--so I'm not sharing his number! But you might try Craigslist, too--there are probably other small-time growers like him out there.
