How can we show movies in the back room of our cafe?

I guess it's illegal to show movies without paying a royalty, even if you don't charge admission. How much are royalties? To whom do you pay them? Can we show "public domain" films for free - and where do we find a listing of these?

There's a list of films in the public domain in the US on wikipedia but how trustworthy it is I couldn't say. There's some excellent films on there: Battleship Potemkin, Death Rides A Horse, Metropolis, Man With A Movie Camera, His Girl Friday.

Check out Swank-you can obtain the rights for single showings or get a blanket license through them to regularly show movies. My undergrad used them for movie nights all the time.
