What is a good MS Office alternative for a netbook?

I just got a netbook for doing school work, and it came with Word and Excel 2010 starter but I'd like to get something more. I don't have the money to get the full 2010 Office suite right now, and I haven't really used any free options so I need some advice.

The netbook is an ASUS 1015pn, which comes with an Intel Atom dual-core processor; I upgraded to 2gb ram and Win 7 home premium. It's not too bad, but still a bit slow opening Word starter, so I'm looking for lighter options that will work well on a netbook.

I need a word processor, and if I could insert pdf forms into the word document, or somehow combine a word document and pdf files into one file that would help for getting my homework done. Also I need a spreadsheet program and something to view powerpoint files in.

What are some good options? I'm fine using different programs, although if there is a suite that does all of this that would be great.

I second OpenOffice. It's a pretty powerful suite of tools that can open most files, including xls and ppt. It's not exactly light though, comparable to MS Office, but with 2GB RAM you shouldn't have any problems with it.

I really like Google Docs. Easy to use and free. Would have to see if you can view ppt files since I haven't done that yet but for doc's and xls files, Google Docs works great.

OpenOffice split recently, so OpenOffice or LibreOffice. Both have a good amount of compatibility.
