My HP Flat Screen Monitor keeps going to sleep

I have an older (4+ year old) HP Pavilion running on XP whose monitor always goes to sleep after a few seconds. I turn the thing off/on and after a few seconds it's back to sleep. I tried getting uninstalling the monitor driver and a reboot but that didn't work. Is it a software issue? Should I consider getting a new monitor?
