How can I get a better wireless signal from a building across the street?

I get my internet from a building across the street (my office), and the connection quality varies pretty widely, depending partly on how many people are online, but I've also noticed that if I open my door and stand on the stoop I can always get a better connection.

I tried buying a usb antenna that I placed inside my window, aiming at the building, but this did not seem to help the connection speed at all, so I took it back.

Any ideas?

Do you get your signal from a card that has an external antenna?

Have you considered building/buying a cantenna?

You could also at the same time consider swapping out one of your office's antennas with a directional pointed towards your apartment, but your IT staff would probably be annoyed with this.

The best you can do is an external antenna, but your probably going to be dropping your connection left and right.

You could try buying a cheap wireless router and putting it closer to your house, but i don't think your companies IT department will like it.

An antenna may or may not help. The bigger problem is interference. The 2.4ghz band that WiFi operates on is very crowded. Portable phones and microwaves can wreak havoc on the signal. Are you able to change the channel that the WiFi operates on? I've found that I often have to experiment using different channels to find the one with the least interference.
