Does anyone know where to find cheap ceramic tiles and the like?

This is for a group arts and craft project, so I need them in bulk. These do not necessarily have to be in perfect condition, as they will most likely be painted, broke into pieces, etc.

Don't forget to check "Big Box" stores like the Home Depot and Lowe's. Sometimes this kind of thing is cheaper new at a large retailer than it is secondhand. It sounds bizarre, but it's true. I discovered this recently whilst hunting bricks to use lining my vegetable garden: used ones were going for $0.25 to $0.50 a piece on craigslist, while brand new ones were $0.20 at Home Depot.

Home Depot and other "big-box" stores will sometimes just up and give you boxes of broken tiles or sell them to you for pennies on the dollar. Broken, chipped, or cracked tiles are useless in the home improvement market, and they're often happy to find someone who wants to haul them away.

I recall there being some place in SODO but I don't know the name. Art Tile up near Wedgewood probably has broken tile.

If you would like to order broken tile this business in San Diego sells broken tiles - http://www.tierrayfuego.com/MexicanTile/broken_tiles.htm

I have ordered regular tile and samples from them before and they were fine.

Tile For Less in sodo is where many smaller contractors go. 2400 block south of safeco across from starbucks HQ or near enough iirc. Much better selection than big box and prices are great.
