My computer is noisy!

I have a MacBook that I use to record audio. Sometimes it heats up and makes an audible whirring sound that gets picked up by the mic.

This makes me sad.

Is there anything I can do to make it stop?

One of the fans in your MacBook might be going bad. The fans spin at very high speeds and the bearings on which they rotate can start to fail and become noisy. If your MacBook is still under warranty (or Applecare), you can take it to the Apple Store genius bar and they can run a diagnostic application to see if that is the problem.

You can also do this yourself. Download the smcFanControll app from http://www.eidac.de . It will display the fan speeds in your menu bar, and you can monitor which fan is most active.

The site http://www.ifixit.com has very good instructions for replacing fans, and sells replacement fans.

Close as many other apps as possible. The fan turns on when the thing gets too hot. Keeping the processing it's doing to a minimum will keep it cooler.

Lift the laptop off the table/desk to allow air to circulate. Close all unnecessary applications, including web browsers and email applications. place a small fan far enough away so the mic doesn't pick up the sound but close enough to keep air flowing around your laptop. Lower the brightness on your screen if possible.
