How can we stop critical mass?

People don't have a right to flagrantly violate traffic laws, regardless of what vehicle they are in (or not in).
People who do such things should be stopped. But how do we go about it?

My suggestions:

1) find the location of the next critical mass. Get an anti-critical mass group going. Have them all drive to the location, and park illegally, including on sidewalks, on bike paths, etc. Generally try to prevent anyone on a bike from leaving.
Advantages: may not require a lot of people. emphasizes the parties being wronged.
Disadvantages: illegal. Hypocritical. could start a riot.

2) deploy police in riot gear to strictly enforce traffic laws on the last friday of the month.
Advantages: makes rowdy bikers the crooks, not the victims. Legal.
Disadvantages: requires the police to do something, and is therefore unlikely.

3) pass a law, stating, roughly, "no driver shall be fined or imprisoned for injuring a bicycle user who was violating traffic laws on the last working friday of the month."
Advantages: legal. lets the citizens do the enforcing.
Disadvantages: Requires the gov't to do something (see 2). could cause riots.

Do any of you have any suggestions?

Seriously: what effect do they really have on your life? Why do you care? Why do you care SO MUCH? Why do they make you want to commit violent acts?

Critical Mass are just another goofball fad like hacky-sack or panty raids. Just ignore them. Find something better to do with your time than getting superheated over stupid stuff that doesn't matter and doesn't affect you.

I'm pretty sure you could stop them by giving them what they want. I'm not quite sure what that is though. The freedom to flagrantly violate traffic laws and inconvenience hundreds of people? Oh, wait.

Don't do anything. There's going to be a death before too long and then the grown ups will be asked to do something about it. The losers who ride with Critical Mass won't even show their faces when it's time to sit down and decide how to clean up that mess.

Just let it run its course. It will die out on its own when people realize that it isn't making the difference that they think it is.

And for the record- not all "Critical Massers" are violent, rude, arrogant, cocky, selfish, or uppity. A lot of them go along for the experience of it all. Riding in a group is fun, a huge group even more so. A lot of pedestrians, and even many drivers love to see it. Many riders are peaceful, happy, positive, and (semi) respectful. Although the entire act in and of itself is not.

I've done the ride once (for the experience- I don't stand behind Critical Mass as an effective statement) and there are far more positive reactions to it, than there are negative. Unfortunately it is a nuisance for many people, and through negative reactions- both from drivers and from cyclists- Critical Mass is quickly developing a bad reputation.

People need something to stand behind, even if it's not everyone else's cup of tea. If there wasn't Critical Mass, there would be something else.

At least it's only once a month.

You can't stop it. My suggestion is not to try.

Look, I think Critical Mass is self-indulgent and short-sighted, and I think it's counterproductive to bike advocacy. But I think responding by advocating that motorists deliberately injure cyclists, or that citizens attempt to detain a group of other citizens, or that police go on a ticket-writing campaign behind plexiglass shields is being either deliberately unrealistic or dangerously careless.

This is a situation where it's best to practice the art of doing nothing effectively. Some of the critical mass riders will realize that having fun at the expense of others doesn't make the roads safer for cyclists. Some will realize that their chief defense of it ("it's only one day a month!") is also the chief argument against its effectiveness as a tool for raising awareness. Others won't realize anything and will keep going. But ultimately it's not the sort of thing that is likely to last. The SPD failed at stopping the naked cyclists in the Fremont Solstice Parade because they had the support of the community. Critical Mass doesn't, and any attempts by the cops to break it up are likely to be met with cheers from delighted motorists, if anything.

I'm a bike commuter and I hate critical mass. All it accomplishes is to breed more contempt from car drivers toward bike riders. They clog traffic, prevent people from getting places on time and slow down pedestrians as well. They're inconsiderate assholes.

Why do you care? Seriously, don't you think that there are other more important things to try to solve in the world than keeping a little group of bike riders from hogging an intersection for a few minutes one day per month. Don't you think it makes more sense to channel your obvious enthusiasm towards pushing for better transit so you don't have to be stuck in your stupid car in the first place.

Well, if you really wanted to be a dick, you could carry broomsticks with you and thrust them into the spokes of their wheels.... but where would that get you?

"3) pass a law, stating, roughly, "no driver shall be fined or imprisoned for injuring a bicycle user who was violating traffic laws on the last working friday of the month."
Advantages: legal. lets the citizens do the enforcing.
Disadvantages: Requires the gov't to do something (see 2). could cause riots."

And gives any motorist who hits a non-CMer that violates a minor law a get-out-of-jail-free card. That's a bright suggestion.

    Get over it already.
