Moving to Greenlake?

What are people's experiences with Greenlake? How would you characterize the neighborhood?

I realize those are incredibly vague questions -- I ask because my girlfriend and I are moving to Seattle from the east coast in September. I'll be going to grad school at the UW and she'll be working downtown. I've been running around Seattle like crazy for the last two days and the only places I've found in our price range (ideally a 2br for no more than $1300, although a big 1br for $950 or less would work too) have been in Greenlake. We were originally thinking we'd like to live in Fremont or Wallingford, but not much seems to be available there right now.

So anyway, my brief impression of Greenlake is that it's pretty fun, but that it's more of a familyish place than a young couples area. Is that correct or am I totally making that up? We're both in our twenties, and while we aren't into going out every night, it would be nice to feel like we were in a community with other people our age, and also in a place that has something of a queer scene.

Thanks for your help!

Wallingford would be a better bet for a queer scene in that area, as there is a Gay bar on 45th. But even then, Wallingford is much like Greenlake - families with kids, dogs and more kids. And Fremont, while it has a strong nightlife, is a bit straight dude-ish.

Have you thought of finding a short-term rental, so that you can explore and get to know other neighborhoods before you settle? The neighborhoods around Capitol Hill - the Central District, Madison Valley, First Hill, Eastlake - all are Gay-friendly, not overly familyish, and easy to commute to UW and downtown.

[Oops, apparently I have been out of the rental market for too long. First Hill & Eastlake are probably out of your price range. But, check out Columbia City, Central District, & Madison Valley.]

Greenlake is young white organic professional heaven. The lake itself is one of the best social gathering spots in the northwest. Very family friendly. It is no way "edgy" or anything like that. Good restaurants, has a bullshit satellite neighborhood real estate agents refer to as "tangletown" as the streets snake around a bit. Access to seedy Aurora attractions, near I5, has a PCC, close to whole foods, pool, library, and so on. I like it.
