What kind of guns do they use in Hollywood?

In the movies, when an actor uses a gun, are they using real unloaded guns, or are all the guns props?

Just curious.

You may interested to peruse this site, Internet Movie Firearms DataBase (IMDB) to read about some of the particulars.

The one describing the arsenal of various weapons seen in Desperado is pretty impressive with outtake stills showing the ones described.

I remember one story about a movie where they only had funds to obtain one true machine pistol and the others were plastic and they had to shoot scenes with various takes showing different cast members firing the weapon and the others handling the fake ones. The weapon got so hot they had to cease filming periodically during the fight sequences to allow it to cool off.

Depends. Brandon Lee was killed with a real one. They use squibs(blanks) and charges for the impact. In the case of lee there was still a bullet in the chamber. Lesson? Use new guns in movies.

They use prop guns in Hollywood movies
There are 3 types of prop guns,

    1) Real guns loaded with blank bullets but these are less and less used because of risks linked to it and related on-set accidents and because insurance companies would not endorse a set with real guns on stage.
    2) Blank firing guns which have been modified to shoot only blank bullets (cannon are not hollow but sealed and only blank bullets filled with powder can be shot.)
    3) There is a company specialized in fake guns that stocks and warehouses in an undisclosed location all guns in sizes and makes. They weigh the same as the real gun, same material, and same color.
This company is the only company affiliated with Hollywood studios to supply props. i saw it on E once.
