Can a business association require its members to donate to its PAC?

Woah. Just received our annual dues for the Washington Trucking Association. Included is a letter explaining "traditional methods of raising funds for the PAC have fallen far short of their goal...It is simply a matter of fairness that we not continue to depend on the benevolence of a few of our members to financially support the industry's political action committee." They go on to explain that their executive committee approved a surcharge on member's dues as a "more equitable way to fund their political activities."

Is this even legal?!? I mean, probably it is, or they wouldn't be doing it (but the BIAW is always getting fined for illegally crossing the political/association boundaries with regards to its membership).

Anyone know where I can go from here? If I don't pay this mandatory PAC donation, they'll cancel our membership. I've got to get my boss to approve that. Honestly, I don't really think being a member of the WTA does that much for our business anyways, so maybe it won't be a hard fight. Suggestions and any legal pointers are welcome. Thanks.

Hahaha...everybody knows that one thing business associations are all about is "fairness."

This is a shakedown and I think whether to fight or to pay is a decision you should at least spread around the responsibility for with others, if not punt entirely and send up the ladder for your bosses to deal with.

As a private association, their actions are probably legal, as your organization's membership is probably voluntary, but they're definitely shady. But again, I'd try to make your responsibility begin and end with explaining the situation to your boss for further action.

    Good luck.
