Lopez for two nights

Just happen to be going up to Lopez Island this weekend.

What are some free San Juan treasures we should know about?

Mostly our plans are to hit up the farmers market, do some hiking, visiting the shell midden archaeology site (not sure if it's much of a site anymore) and a weanie roast on the beach, possibly trying to kick it with Paul Allen who bought up a sizable chunk of the island.

Sounds like you have a great plan, and honestly Lopez is the San Juan Island where you don't really want too much of an agenda, you know?

You can get by with just your bikes on Lopez if you want to. Bringing your car? Wave to passing cars. It is the Lopez way! I love a small county park on the southwest end of the island called Agate Beach County Park. It's a perfect picnic lunch spot or place to spend an afternoon reading or just chillin (as we're doing there in the photo below!)  Spencer Spit is also awesome (and our fave place to camp) and that's a State Park, so remember now you will need a Discover Pass to enter a State Park for day use.

Shark Reef (SW side of the island, no actual sharks but plenty of seals) and Spencer Spit (NE side) are the classic hiking spots. Neither is particularly difficult.

Also, note that ferry travel between the islands is free if you are a pedestrian or have a bike. Friday Harbor on San Juan Island is an obvious place to go as a pedestrian. If you have a bike, almost any of the islands provides a nice ride (Lopez is the nicest biking destination of the islands, but San Juan has the historic parks, Orcas has Moran State Park, and Shaw's extremely peaceful and quiet).
