Stolen mail?

I had a package stolen/disappear that was confirmed delivered yesterday. It was sent USPS Priority mail with delivery confirmation but no insurance. Our mail person leaves packages inside our secure entry, but still sitting in the common entry area.

I'm brikkity-broke and this was $100+ of clothes that I majorly splurged on. Is there anything I can do in this situation or is it just a loss? I haven't been able to get in touch with the retailer yet, but plan to call tomorrow.

You need to report the mail theft to the United States Postal Inspectors.

They are federal agents who investigate crimes relating to the mail.

Fill out a stolen mail report here:

You can try calling your local post office branch and ask if there's any way they can trace it - I once had a missing package that was supposedly delivered turn up a few days later. I think they were going to deliver it and marked it as delivered but then left it on the truck or something.

If the package is really, really gone and the retailer won't do anything about it, contact your credit card company and see if you can file a claim with them. Some will cover stolen items purchased with the card.

We also have a secure entry where packages get left and occasionally stolen. My boyfriend pays for a UPS store mailbox because he doesn't want to ship packages to work and doesn't want to risk them getting stolen. It's expensive but he's willing to pay for the convenience.

Yep, Soundslikepuget is right about reporting it.

But unfortunately, in my experience, it's slim odds for financial recovery. Do report it and contact the retailer.

I've started shipping all packages to my work address (not a solution for everyone, I understand).

You can also set up a thing with your local post office that they won't deliver any packages...just those little pick up slips. This, of course, means you have to GO to the post office to pick them up (so hope you work traditional hours or have Sat mornings free). But when it's not something I want shipped to work, I ship it to my home and then have to go pick it up at the post office a few days later.

Stolen mail seems to be on the rise, at least in my neighborhood. What I would suggest, though it is a little expensive, is to get a PO Box. For about $36.00 a year your mail will be more secure but the off set is you need to go to the post office to pick up your mail.

I have been doing that for a couple of years now and it is a little bit of a pain but I haven't had any issues with stolen mail.

And seriously, I live in a damn police box so some of these crooks have balls on 'em.
