Anyone ever shipped a car cross country?

I'm moving from one coast to another, and thinking of shipping my car. Has anyone ever used a car shipping service? Suggestions, warnings, tips? It's expensive, but easier than driving 3000 miles. Yet it seems like there's so much that could go wrong, and I've heard horror stories about cross-country movers...

Cascade Vehicle Shipping, Inc., (360) 834-7898, did a great job for me.

I drove from New Hampshire to Seattle back in 2008 and, after a few months here, realized a car was a luxury I could do without.

Cascade Vehicle picked up my car on a residential street in Ballard within 10 minutes of the appointed time, loaded it in a covered 18-wheeler, and delivered it on time to my brother on the upper Upper East Side (read: narrow one-way streets, lots of double-parking, way above the ritzy area) in NYC in five days.

Not a scratch on it. The driver even found a parking space for it. And for $1030.

Very satisfactory transaction for me. Good luck!

Mine was packed in a moving van (with appropriate stuff packed in the back seat and trunk, etc). There was a structure that protected the top and items were packed above it also. When it arrived and other stuff taken off I was the one that climbed in a gently drove it out of the truck bed. Being totally enclosed it was very protected.

We drove another car across the country diagonally (the longest distance you can travel in the lower 48). I have also driven the largest gas burning U-Haul truck there is (44-46 foot?) across from upper New York State to northern California. I would say to you if you had the time, apply the money to making the trip yourself - it can be an eye-opening experience.

I just had a car shipped from MA to WA. They did a great job. No problems whatsoever (although I had heard stories too and was a little concerned).

    AA Auto & Home Movers
    877-744-7489

IT cost $1425 from Cape Cod to Capitol Hill.

This isn't exactly shipping but is much much cheaper - I don't know what percent of your concern is tied up with the cost - but a drive away service may be an option.

I once needed to get from New Hampshire to Seattle and hooked up with a drive away company. A couple who "summered" Arizona but lived in Connecticut needed their Range Rover delivered. They paid the company a small logistics fee (I was paid nothing). I don't remember being given a morality or driving test before signing on so I don't know how much risk you are taking with the random driver.

I then drove a repo'ed rag top jeep up the coast of California all the way to the Seattle dealership who was repossessing it. Sort of evil I suppose but driving a convertible on Hwy 101 was the most ecstatic thing I've ever done with my clothes on.

In short the downside is the miles on your car and the chance of damages (but I'm sure the company has some sort of insurance on the vehicle)- on the upside it is very inexpensive.
