Is Mattie's fall into the snake pit symbolic?

You know the old expressions.... if you lay down with dogs, you'll get up with feas...

Or the chinese proverb... Before you set out for vengence, dig two graves...

Or every form of revenge requires a sacrifice.

Hmmm. Had not thought of that. Maybe so. I read it more as a demonstration of Mattie's grit in the face of a terrifying situation. Not saying you're wrong, tho.

If a sacrifice was required, or there was some point Portis was making about the perils of revenge, Mattie sure did not learn the lesson - even years afterwards she still felt perfectly justified and proud of what she had done.

Could be an allusion to the "Heroes’ Journey?" Mattie doesn't go through all the steps of the monomyth but she does hit a good number of them: The Call to Adventure, The Road of Trials, and Crossing of the First Threshold spring to mind. Perhaps the fall into the pit represents Rescue from without for Mattie as she has to be rescued by both LaBeouf and Rooster?

I see it neither as a metaphor, nor a cheap plot device. It didn't really stick out to me, perhaps the "just-so" storytelling kept me from seeing that event as anything special.
