  2 0 I would suggest that you get a Basil Garden-In-A-Bag. Here is a link: http://www.inhabitatshop.com/garden-in-a-bag.html It costs a little more up front, but you can grow it and pick it as you need it and it lasts for quite a while if you keep watering it. I had a Basil one that I didn't really take too great care of and it lasted for more than 6 months I would say. Also, you can just put it by your sink or in a window. No need to actually have a garden or any outdoor space. Take roots out of bag put in a small pot and then have a basil plant that's pretty bushy that you can thin a bit at a time.   1 0 Trader Joes has great deals on basil, they sell a huge clamshell container of stalks for about $4 but if you only need a few leaves at a time you can try one of their lush living plants for the same price...it might not live forever but for $4 you can enjoy it for a couple months and not feel guilty. The fresh basil is at the check out stand, a big bag for like 3 or 4 dollars, small for half that. It's a lot of basil for a much better price compared to QFC or Safeway.   0 0 PCC (in Fremont, at least) sells loose fresh basil. If you see only plastic boxes of basil, ask the produce staff if they have any loose; I've seen them open a box and sell people only as much as they need.
