What's the grooviest downmarket thing to see or do in LA that I don't already know about?

Don't say Amoeba Records because that is the purpose of our trip. Special attention will be paid to recommendations for hole-in-the-wall Mexican or Central American restaurants.

The Museum of Jurassic Technology (of Mr. Wilson's Cabinet of Wonder fame ... thanks for the book recommendation, Paul Constant!)

Good and cheap Mexican breakfast: Gilbert's El Indio on Pico Blvd in Santa Monica. I'd go just for the chips and pickled carrots. OK for lunch and dinner too, but a bit of a scene, so less recommended after 11AM.

Not Mexican or Central American, but ...

Bruno's Ristorante on Ocean Blvd ... Excellent and cheap Italian food in Santa Monica near the pier. There may be a roach or two crawling on the wall. Ignore them.

Versaille Cuban food (Pico & La Cienega and 3 other locations) ... you'll reek of garlic for a week though
