Good and cheap Mexican breakfast: Gilbert's El Indio on Pico Blvd in Santa Monica. I'd go just for the chips and pickled carrots. OK for lunch and dinner too, but a bit of a scene, so less recommended after 11AM. Not Mexican or Central American, but ... Bruno's Ristorante on Ocean Blvd ... Excellent and cheap Italian food in Santa Monica near the pier. There may be a roach or two crawling on the wall. Ignore them. The Museum of Death is horrifying but definitely worth going to if you can stomach it, and the owner is a cool Jim Rose-type. It includes an extensive collection of serial killers' letters and personal belongings, funeral home embalming videos, a number of graphic photos of murder victims, etc...I can't believe I went, but it was fascinating. The Psychiatry: an Industry of Death Museum run by a human rights group is another strange place. Galco's Soda Pop Shop has 400 different kinds of soda. Pick up the book "LA Bizarro." I bought it after my trip there but it includes hundreds of weird places to visit.
