Have you ever met anyone with Dissociative Identity Disorder aka Multiple Personalities that you know of?

It is a controversial diagnosis. Do you think it really exists? If not, why? How did you know the person had DID if you ever met anyone with it?

My mom spent ~25 years at the VA as a psychiatrist on the "lock down" units (very sick people). I asked her this question one day.

She said in all her time working at the VA and teaching at a nearby research university, she had met only 1 person who she truly believed had authentic multiple personalities.

I guess that puts her on the skeptical side of the controversy.

I've met people who dissociate. That's a pretty dramatic thing to see. I don't know if they really acknowledge people as having multiple personalities anymore - dissociation itself I think is real.

An ex claimed to have it. They were instead diagnosed BPD (I assume many faux-DID cases might be the same.)

I love how self-diagnosed DID cases seem so have gone down significantly after bullshit fiction like Sibyl went out of favor.

I've been accused of having it but I think it's just a result of the various regenerations in my case.
