Looking for romantic ideas in downtown Ballard.

Looking for a good spot to go for my Husbands birthday. It's on a Sunday and we got a sitter ready to roll. Now we have no idea where to go. Were looking for drinks and to eat along the way. Any suggestions would help.

Volterra is always nice for special occasions (Northern Italian/Tuscan). Ocho is also a great place to start. White sangrias are tops there! Lots to choose from....Walrus & Carpenter, Staple & Fancy...

If it were my birthday, I'd demand we start at walrus and carpenter. I'll take a pappy van winkle - the world's best bourbon ever - 'cause its the world's most perfect bourbon and it's rarer and elusiver than a baby albino pigeon. then you should get a little plate of cheese or whatever. i think oysters taste like something obscene but i truly enjoy walrus and carpenter - even the non-oystery dishes are exceptional. the cocktails are just beautiful.

you should go do this around five pm, so you can go rent bikes at the dutch bike company next door and go ride to golden gardens! make sure you make out on the beach. perhaps stop and have a cocktail at ray's, not because you particularly like ray's but because it feels kind of birthdayish in there and their view is insane. then ride back to ballard and return your bikes. you might want to stop at ocho on the way back, because those little plates are the perfect sub-appetizer. they're cheap and delicious and very tiny, and then you leave having only spent three bucks and the flavor of something exotic on your tongue.

i vote for bastille for dinner. here's why: staple & fancy is already booked til 2014, moshi moshi sushi is safeway quality but priced for yuppies, la carta de oaxaca isn't great enough to be a birthday dinner place, volterra's out because their italian food still tastes kinda like fancy prego & noodles, and there's no reason for le gourmand to charge that much. bastille is just enough fancy for me and it feels like you're going on a vacation just walking in there. every meal i've had at bastille has made me close my eyes in bliss while eating it. then you've gotta go get some gelato. hopefully they'll still have some of that pistachio left - it's always the first to go.

isn't it great when birthdays mean you get to eat well, too? hooray!

    Bastille!!

Also, if you need any, erm, toys for later, Wild at Heart is pretty fantastic.

If it was not a Sunday, I'd recommend you start at Sambar and move on from there. But you can do that another night...

As it stands, I'll make this easy. Go to Ocho and drink house wine and eat tapas until you're stupid drunk or full of food and...

Well, you can imagine the rest.

    Happy birthday!!
