Does anyone have experience with or insight into the ease, difficulty, or problems with building and using a bike with a frame made of bamboo?

The Bamboo Bike Studio offers kits and teaches hands-on workshops (none around here) on building your own bicycle frame from bamboo.

There are other sites on the web that address techniques and materials and this is one that provides links of some of them.

There is, of course, the attraction of a DIY project inherent in this, but is using a bicycle with a frame made of bamboo dangerous or risky?

Is anyone doing this around here? Are there any local experts on this unique technology?

The main thing I can think of is that bamboo is a monocot, and therefore splits very easily. A head-on crash or sudden stop...anything that puts direct pressure on the front or back of the bike...might crack those spars right in half.

On the other hand, they might be equally easy to repair or replace. Cheaply, anyway.

They attract pandas. There's nothing worse than being chased by hungry pandas while riding to work.

two years ago on the dead baby downhill a DIY bamboo bike came apart at the fork resulting in a very nasty face slide on airport way and an ambulance ride for the person on the bamboo bike.

So yes there is som major danger with making these. Be very careful and sure of your construction.
