Flying during the holidays

I keep hearing that flights can get really cheap around the holidays if one waits until the very last minute to book, and is flexible about times and whatnot. Has anyone had any experience and or actual success with this method?

It's usually the day OF the holiday, and not any time before or after.

For example, Christmas day is supposed to be really cheap.

A few years ago I heard they were working on a soft drink vending machine that would recalculate price every time the temperature increased by one degree. That's kinda what airlines do. Ticket prices (and moving vans and car rentals) are computed by software now and as soon as demand starts to increase, so do ticket prices. Yes, flying on a holiday morning or afternoon may be a pretty cheap (comparatively speaking) fare, but if people need to get home the next day, the evening flights will be pricey. However, flights on, say, late night Christmas Eve are going to be more affordable (and pretty fucking depressing unless you are headed for somewhere like Bali or Fiji...then, what the hell, right?).

So, I'd make one clarification with your question. It isn't so much the last minute deal that's cheap, but rather the when-no-one-else-wants-to-fly deal that'll save you dough. And of course, destination plays its part as well.
