So who's used 23andMe.com? -- And won't this put ancestry.com etc completely out of business?

It's 'okay', they have had a few sales during which you got the testing for free with a $9.00/month subscription to their updating. They come out with newer tests results periodically. I assume the $9 goes towards running your DNA through the new test.

It only finds your maternal relations because they can only test mitochondria DNA.

II don't know if anyone can test patrilineal genetic info. ...Or if that info even exists, any geneticists out there?

The effectiveness relies strictly on how large the eventual DNA database grows. Only if there is enough participants will you find matches that might not have been discernible through more conventional methods. Once found you still have the difficulty of trying to find the dots that would connect you to that distant relative.

Ancestry.com relies on accessing and correlating your family knowledge with existing public records and information as well as cross referencing the results others have obtained through their efforts.

A DNA sample is never going to lead you to the new places that the inscriptions in a family bible, information on old headstones in a cemetery, the facts contained in census records, or notations in obscure local history tomes may take you.

    It's a semi-novelty DNA test, not a genealogy program.

It's very doubtful that ancestory.com will go out of business, but yes, that relative finder you've linked is very interesting, especially for people that have little family history info to start from (orphans, foster kids).
