Sometime it Feels Like the Person I'm Talking to Doesn't Exist

I have a recurring thought that people I'm talking to don't exist. That they're only in my head and I'm talking to myself. Sometimes this can cause me anxiety and paranoia. Once or twice I needed to exit a situation because it was so intense (in one case the person actually seemed to understand and was supportive even though I hadn't explained other than saying I needed to go outside). The experience is different at times. Sometimes I'll be talking to someone and they will begin to look more like me or a family member. Their features will be very familiar in a strange way. Lately people have been feeding into this with statements they make. For example, a particular person I know who I've had this experience with (and I don't think I've ever mentioned this to him) saw something in my room the other day and made a statement something like, "yup, I guess we really are the same person". Another friend knows about this and has made some statements to corroborate it. I have other forms of paranoia, but I've never been diagnosed with anything or taken any medications and lead a basically normal life. I'm in my early thirties. I'm wondering if anyone else has heard of or had such experiences or knows anything about this sort of thing...?

    What you're experiencing is called "derealization." It's a form of dissociation. It can be a symptom of any of a number of quite different psychiatric disorders. It can also be from sleep deprivation, drug use, or a neurological condition such as epilepsy.

    That's my armchair psychiatrist answer. Please go see a real psychiatrist. Good luck.

    Maybe talk with a mental health professional? Find someone accredited and sit down to speak with them about your fears and feelings.

    Aside from schizophrenia it's possible that you are experiencing some alterations in brain function for other reasons - since most of these are progressive and can get scarier the longer you don't pay attention to them you really need to get in to see a doctor in case there are physical changes in your brain that are causing this. Go to your family doc and get referred to a shrink and a neurologist.

    The common sense advice would be to get your head MRI'd (the visual changes you're seeing are in particular troubling) and then spend some time with a referred or recommended counselor to diagnose what's going on in there.
    Either way -Let's assume you've got some sort of disorder or illness.
    All of questionland could all play Armchair Therapists, but that doesn't help you - you should go and get real, not internet, help. Besides, we avatar type people exist even less than face to face people, so I doubt this helps your illness -- more likley it feeds into it.

    Otherwise, it sounds like me either when I was 30 and existentially angsty, or when I haven't had enough sleep.
    And I often don't exist, at least in my head - so maybe you're talking with me.

    One last note-- Do me -and yourself- a favor and stay away from Lewis Carroll until you get diagnosed.

    Your at an age where schizophrenia manifests ( I think it's the same age for guys as girls but maybe it shows up earlier for guys) and bipolar disorder. If you can you should see a dr. When they take your history be honest, even if it doesn't make sense. I was misdiagnosed for years because I was just talking about what was going on presently and not looking at the whole picture. It wasn't until I was 28 till I got a great dr who pieced together many instances in my life and was able to get a correct diagnosis. Some of what you're describing could be a form of mania but dr is gonna help you more

    Are you taking any medications, or using pot heavily?

    Consider your diet...as a beginning, increase your calcium and lithium intake by drinking sparkling water such as Pellegrino.

    Avoid caffeine and sugars.

    If you also have anxiety or depression, perhaps these strange obsessive intrusive-ish thoughts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intrusive_thoughts are byproducts of your brain doing its thing. The way a running car engine produces exhaust, your mind dealing with anxiety or depression might "emit" the kind of obsessive thoughts you describe.

    I'm not an expert or anything.

    In a way, you're experiencing a oneness with nature (people) which is pretty freaking Zen, so maybe it isn't so bad?

    I'd consult a shrink, though! It'll be OK.
