What are good funky/weird places to eat/drink within walking or busing of downtown Seattle?

Myself and several of my fellow grad students are going to be in town for a conference in two weeks, and we're staying at a hotel at 6th & Pike. I used to live in Portland, and I really miss the offbeat culture of the northwest. Most of the folks coming to this conference have never been to Seattle or even the west coast, and I was hoping to take them to some places that represent the weirdness that I so dearly love about Portland and Seattle. The only requirement is that it's easy to get to from downtown. Any thoughts?

Emmett Watson's Oyster Bar in the Market for seafood -- fish and chips, that sort of thing. Funky and down-home atmosphere, even surrounded by all those tourists. Even more heavily touristed but still funky is Lowell's -- sit upstairs. They sell their Sound view but the people view is way better.

I love, love, love the Crumpet Shop on 1st, but they've remodeled and I haven't been back since -- if they've ruined it I will cry tears of blood.

Up the other direction at 1124 Howell St. (just above Boren) is Market House Meats, where you can get a giant corned beef or pastrami sandwich in a place that's pretty much 1948 still.

Of course, the best places are somewhat far from you, at the other end of downtown -- Salumi, home of the greatest cured meats in the univers, and the 1001 delights of the ID -- special recommendations for Green Leaf Vietnamese (get the Vietnamese coffee, trust me, GET THE VIETNAMESE COFFEE), and for the newly-reopened World Pizza, genuine Seattle all the way down to the heartwood.

The hill climb behind the Market: for lunch there's El Puerco Lloron an this great little Italian restaurant next door that I can't remember the name of. And for drinking there's the ever amazing ZigZag.

Funky: Can Can in the Market for a show, The Whiskey Bar and The Nitelight for crazy people, Unicorn and Pony (gay) for unique ambiance, Pinxo for great tapas in Belltown, Shortys for cheap drinks/hot dogs also in Belltown. I could go on and on...

If you get down to Pioneer Square to check out the architecture, go to The Reading Room. It's new and located in the former literary performance space of Elliot Bay Books. I think it's owned by Tamara Murphy, like Elliot Bay Cafe is. Anyway, small plates and craft cocktails can be found there. Have fun!
