Can anybody suggest a restaurant in which it isn't depressing to eat alone?

Cafe's are good for this. You can bring a book, relax, maybe make conversation with others now and then, and some of them have good food, too. I'd suggest looking in that direction.

Enlighten, in Ballard, for example. It offers some of the food of Root Table (the attached restaurant) and the atmosphere of a cafe.

Cafe Presse! Also, I eat alone all the time pretty much anywhere I want...if you bring a book it helps if you're not really outgoing. In any case, sitting at the bar is a lot better alone than at a table.

I see lots of people going to Indian lunch buffets alone... Mmmmmmm Indian. I'm gonna do that today. Alone. ;)

A sports bar when a game featuring a local team (that you like) is on all the screens.
