Why must I massage my remote's buttons?

I've changed the batteries, but my tv remote doesn't want to do anything efficiently anymore. Besides, I've never understood why I should need to caress the buttons to make things happen. Aren't buttons just binary things that should effect my wishes without romance? Apparently not, but why the coquettish, fickle behavior of late?

This is so awkward. I have no idea, but I really hope someone does.

Can you separate the button plate easily? Sometimes crap gets under there and cleaning where they strike could help the buttons be more effective.

Or you could just give up and get one of those reprogrammable ones that works for whatever you have hooked up ( the tv, DVD , whatever cable or stereo etc) then you have a new shiny remote that works for everything

Probably a combination of wear from repetitive motion, and the crap that sublevelthree mentioned. As in food crumbs, oil and dead skin cells, etc.

If you can carefully pry the remote open and move the rubber/silicone key pad out of the way, you can clean the metal contact points and the back of the keypad buttons with a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol. (Take the batteries out first.) Reassemble when you're finished and it should be as good as new.

Sometimes good hygiene is all it takes to rekindle the spark.

When switches fail, they often behave intermittently. This is especially annoying if the failed switch is on an important button, such as Enter or one of the Up/Down buttons. Since they are often-used, they are generally the first to fail.

It's time to buy a new universal remote. They aren't expensive.
