Laptop theft protection?

So, my husband's laptop was stolen recently, and I'm wondering if there's a way to track a laptop if it gets stolen? Like a GPS device or some sort of a software? I'm so not bright about things like this, I'd like to get some advice on what kind of products are available and what works. He's thinking of buying a new laptop, and this time, we need to do something to protect it.. Help!

Yeah, what Russ said. That's a good one.

There's also "STOP" (Secure Tracking of Office Property), my former employer used it.http://www.stoptheft.com/site/index.php

But, I think it's more of a deterrent. Lojack for Laptops does more to help you recover the stolen computer, if I'm not mistaken.

Wow, Lojack looks really good. We'll probably try it. Thanks Russ, as always! And thank you, soundslikepuget for the info as well. Because the laptop is going to be in our shop where people can see it from the window, the STOP sticker might be a good idea as a deterrent. Someone told me about a cable with a lock, but one more cable on our rather messy table wasn't so appealing to us. So, thanks!

Kensington is the company that came up with the standard for the cable locking slot that most laptops come equipped with. I highly recommend that you consider a cable for securing it, especially with it being visible and therefore more vulnerable. It stops the quick grab and run technique.
