What laser printer should I get?

I was reading the comments on the Inkjet ink issue and wondered what Laser Printer I should get if I wanted an economy one where I wouldn't get robbed on the ink side.

If you have a color and B&W options all the better.

Thanks

    I have this one:

    http://www.amazon.com/Brother-Printer-HL2270DW-Wireless-Monochrome/dp/B00450DVDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1322980269&sr=8-1

and I really really like it. I don't print frequently (a few pages a week? Maybe?) and it works well for me. It took us maybe 6 months to use up the initial starter cartridge, and then we bought a super-huge cartridge that claims it will print something like 2000 pages or 5000 pages. We've been using it for the last 6-9 months (I really don't remember) and it's still going strong.

If you want black and white, and size isn't an issue I'd pick up a used HP LaserJet. Find something like a LaserJet 4, 2100, 4000, or any of the other workgroup printers. You can usually find them for under $50 easily (craigslist, ebay, amazon marketplace). The key is to find one that you can buy the toner for on monoprice.com.

Those printers have duty cycles so much higher than you are likely to hit at home, that it will basically last you forever.

I find it's much easier to just print anything I need in color at Kinko's than to try to deal with a color printer. If you have to print color often, just ignore my advice.

I've had good experiences with Samsung and Canon Lasers.

I generally would worry less about build quality and whether drivers are available for my OS (Mac and Win7 aren't always available depending on what you're picking up.) I suppose that's also a problem with inkjet printers as well.

What I like about laser printers is that the toner doesn't clog, it doesn't spit and ruin prints, it just slowly fades away. It certainly doesn't dry up as normal inkjet carts does. For heavy use... you can worry about the most economic solution (which generally is a laser anyway!)

As I said in the other thread, while the option of color is nice, consumer printers do a crap job anyway, so I'd just eschew it and pay to have color items printed with a quality printer as necessary. You really don't *need* anything but black for most all things a home office requires. Save yourself the money and frustration.

get wifi is all I'm saying. airPrinting is what its all about.

all printers rob you on the ink side, in my opinion.

I'm not familiar with the "comments on the inkjet issue" to which you refer.

However, we had an HP Color Laser Jet at my last job. I'm sorry I can't remember the exact model number, but we printed a LOT (my boss there was one of those old school guys who has to do everything on paper), and from what I recall, we had to replace the toner about 3x a year to the tune of about $100 bucks a pop. That was with HIGH volume printing.

But, if you can be talked back into inkjet land, I'll tell you I LOVE the Kodak printer I got for my mom last year. The Kodak costs a little more up front, but the ink is about half the price you pay compared to other brands. In the long run, you save a ton because Kodak ink is the cheapest.
