Does anybody know what book (if any) begins with the line, "It was 100 degrees in the shade the day she hit town"?

My neighbor asked me this question a little under a week ago, and I've been looking online ever since, with zero success.
She originally tonight that it was a line from "Finnegan's Wake," but no longer believes that to be the case. I checked that book just in case, andit seems that she was correct. I realize that she very well may have gotten part of the quote wrong, or perhaps it isn't the first line of the book at all.
If anybody has any ideas, or any tips on where else to look, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
