Where can I get ripe plantains?

In Seattle or nearby, that is. Also, how does one go about selecting good ripe plantain?

I don't really get produce from Trader Joes, so I could be wrong, but I thought I saw some there the last time I went. If you've got a TJ's in your hood, maybe pop-in check it out.

In any event, if plantains are farmed and shipped just like bananas, you'll prolly have to buy them a little unripe and ripen them at home. Putting them in a paper bag like marymc said will help the process along, putting an apple into the bag with them will quicken it if you're in a pinch.

There are a lot of neighborhood Latino markets in White Center and Burien that have them. Guadalupe Market on 128th at Ambaum is a good bet. Or, if you don't want to venture into the south end, El Mercado Latino at Pike Place Market (in the Corner Market & Sanitary Market, behind Mee Sum Pastry and Mr. D's Greek Deli) may have some.

Medium-ripe plantains are yellow, or yellow with black spots. When the skins have turned almost black, they're fully ripe. If you can't find them ripe enough, you can put them in a loosely-closed paper bag for a few days to hurry them along.
