Who is your favorite US President, and why?

It's President's Day after all. Here are the rules. You get to pick one. None of this "Washington and Lincoln" bullshit. One. And you get one paragraph to explain it. It doesn't have to be the president you consider to be the best ever, just your favorite for whatever reason. I'll start.

I pick Harry Truman. I've always admired Truman because he came from humble beginnings, and never forgot who he was. He had a sharp wit and a silver tongue, and the courage of his convictions. He lived by the motto "Do what you think is right, and let them all go to hell." I think he made the correct, albeit difficult decision to use the atomic bomb to end World War II. He also desegregated the Armed Forces which, in my opinion, was a major step forward that helped engender the necessary culture shift to bring the Civil Rights movement to bear. But most of all, I dig Truman because he was just a normal All-American guy who didn't even want to be President, but did the job as best as he was able when it was thrust upon him.

I will speak up for Gerald Ford (no. 38).

Here was a man that found a way to take a country from one of the darkest criminal periods of the Presidency with Nixon and move it on. Many of us were so angry at the pardon he gave to Nixon, but in retrospect, it was the one way to start the healing, instead of untold months of unpacking the ugliness that would have ensued.

He was very aware of the unique position he held in history being a person who became President without ever being elected (by Electoral College) to either of the two top jobs of this nation. He was a respected honest and principled man, with an impeccable past, scholar, athlete, WWII Navy veteran, and 25 years as a representative of the State of Michigan.

He served 10 months as Vice-President before taking on the remainder of Nixon's term, nearly 2 and 1/2 years of the Presidency. He had a full presidency even though he served a shortened term (it is worth reviewing). Betty Ford in her own right was a trailblazer and had a profound effect on promoting the open discussion of mental health, addiction and breast cancer issues for women.

Hard to pick just one because even though there have been a slew of real winners (he says sarcastically), we've been fortunate to have several really, really great presidents: Lincoln, of course, Teddy Roosevelt, Kennedy prevented WWIII. But I have to say FDR. He gave people hope and encouragement when there seemed to be nothing but wall-to-wall despair. Instituted protective triggers to help prevent another financial collapse (rich people hated him for that). Overcame the ravages of polio to lead this country out of its darkest periods: the Great Depression, Pearl Harbor. He made us keep the faith when it looked like Hitler might actually win the war. He encouraged and inspired us to sacrifice, gear up, and fight the good fight.

Personally, I think he saved the country.

James K. Polk. Only because the They Might Be Giants song played an important part in my childhood. In truth, I'm not a fan of his presidency. Manifest Destiny FTL. But I do love the song.

Gotta love FDR. He was a RICH guy who didn't mind helping out the underdog in any number of creative ways (CCC, WPA, etc.) Decorum was observed, much as it was in Hollywood. No badgering press prying into illness and marital privacy. War was entered into at the last possible moment when the US was overtly provoked by Japan. The era could be endlessly rewritten, but I feel FDR was mostly a gentleman and a statesman who certainly had his detractors.

All this aside, if a men is getting his sexual and emotional needs met outside his marriage, I feel this is really no one's business. However, I appreciate knowing if he is a serial cheater who abuses women on many levels, particularly in the workplace. Double standard? A question of degree. I know I have done things in my youth that would certainly not stand up to the scrutiny of the current climate. Perhaps the guys at your old frat house are not the best judges of character, but what have you been doing in past two or three decades?

I like Nixon, because I felt he was a true middle class person. I think his downfall came from not believing himself up to dealing with the "elites" and much of the pressure to oust him came not from any big crimes on the scale of things, but from political foes who feared the changes he was bringing (detente, end Vietnam, off the gold standard, FAP (which amounted to a negative income tax!), and much more).
