Molly moons or frozen custard?

The debate was on slog last week, thought I'd bring it to questionland. I'm popping in for my first taste of the moons after I leave work today.

**update** 12:45
I'll be there in about 20 minutes if any questionlanders in the capital hill area want to say 'sup.

I'm not sure the two can be compared since Molly Moon's is more about it's unique flavors while OSFC prides itself on it's texture and their process of making it.
I would say, if you're feeling kinky, go to Molly Moon's, but if you're just down for some old fashioned, straight-up ice cream, go to OSC. I wasn't too crazy about OSFC's waffle cones...a bit on the thin and soft side.
Looking forward to hearing your report, Luke!

This is a difficult one. And I know I've already said my opinion on Slog, but for what it's worth, I LOVED the texture of the Old School Frozen Custard. It was creamy and smooth and dense. But, as is traditional with frozen custard, they only have three flavors a day (chocolate, vanilla, and a rotating third). They have a lot of toppings, though, to customize sundaes and shakes and such.

But I still love Molly's for the innovative flavors (salted caramel, YUM!). Also: MM's just debuted the raspberry mint sorbet which sounds heavenly (but has not yet been tried).

So really, it'll come down to what I'm in the mood for that day.

I've tried chocolate at both, and I'm gonna have to go with Molly Moon's on this one. The Old School chocolate reminded me of a Frosty from Wendy's, and it wasn't as rich or dense as I was hoping for. Perhaps it was overhyped. I preferred the texture over OS, it didn't immediately melt into ice cream soup, yet it still maintained a creamy texture. And they also have salted caramel which beats both chocolates hands down.

i still think it comes down to a matter of preference! no need to beat up on each other... molly moon's does creative, fun ice cream flavors well and old school does creamy, old-fashioned frozen custard well. if you want salted caramel, go get it. if you want vanilla custard, go get it. they are both only blocks away!

its funny how crazy people get over this so-called 'ice cream war.' i work at OS and one of my buddies works at MM. theres more than enough hungry hipsters for everyone :)

Old-time Jersey pre-school memories of the only real treat, which was frozen custard at the frozen custard stand. As to flavor, vanilla is the only way to go on flavor in frozen custard, because you taste the rich egg yolk finish. Dip-cones also good. I tried Old School vanilla, and it brought back memories.

    Molly Moon's.

I'm sorry to say that because, when it's done well, I like frozen custard much better. They both do what they do very well, and I do enjoy the frozen custard. The problem is 3 flavors a day just doesn't cut it. If they step up their selection, I'll probably change my mind.

Molly Moon's. The custard is really good, but in a comparison, Molly Moon's is better.

    Molly Moon's.

I personally found the custard to be too similar to soft serve, albeit slightly denser. I tried the chocolate and the flavor was sorely lacking. Molly Moon's chocolate is very strong and, unlike OSC, doesn't taste fake.

Frozen custard all the way. Old School stole my heart by the end of the first cone. Molly Moon's might have creative flavors, but all three times I have been there, I have been utterly disappointed. The balance always seems off -- the scout mint was too creamy and not minty enough, the chocolate was meh, and the salted caramel was so salty I felt like gagging, and I frickin love salt. If I want amazing non-grocery store ice cream, I drive myself up to Bellingham for Mallard's.

Both are seriously overrated. And honestly, if you are willing to wait in line outside for ice cream at Molly Moons you need some help. It's fucking ice cream.

Try Snoqualmies Frozen Lemon Custard available at Metropolitan Market or Whole Foods. That is the best shit ever!!!
