Depends on what kind, who you're trying to impress and how much you care. I (a 25 year old relatively fashionable girl) would find it kind of endearing (depending on context) though I know some of my lady friends would not be turned on. Basically, wear whatever makes you feel good* because confidence is the best accessory.

*Caveat: to a certain extent. Ren-fair wear on a daily basis is kind of antisocial.

No. But in fairness, it's not okay for girls either. If you want your feet to be warm, wear shoes. If you want a nice breeze through your toes, wear sandals. It's a simple rule.

With long pants, who cares? But if you're wearing shorts or a kilt, it tends to look kind of scary.

Then again, I hate the sight of people's toenails, so covering them is good. But if you want the aerated comfort of a sandal, why would you wear socks? Doesn't make sense to me. However, I generally neither notice nor care what people are wearing.

    Not white socks.

And, there is such a thing as "so nerdy, that it's cool."

Not really, unless your intent is to look unredeemably square. Bonus points for wool socks.

If that guy likes dirty socks, have at it.

As long you pair it with the right outfit, go for it. It's all about everything you're wearing working together, not any one component.

I tend to think anything's possible, and the human condition is sufficiently diverse to allow it. Still... I can't fathom a situation in which it would work for me... until I'm 65, at least.

I never understood what the big deal was. I'd rather someone wear socks with their sandals than have to see some people's gross feet. I agree with other people who say who cares? If it looks okay to you then you should wear it, you shouldn't have to run every clothing combination by some fashion authority before you wear it.
What I'd like to know isn't whether or not it's okay, but why some people say it's not okay.

If you like it, wear it! Who cares what people think! Really, why give a damn what others think about your footwear???!!!

Absolutely. I think I'll wear them today.

But never, ever, ever, ever: Birkenstocks and wooly socks, or Tevas and wooly socks. The look you're going for is "nerd" not "hippie". A nice pair of argyles, or other patterned dress sock, in a brightish color, with a stylish pair of fisherman's sandals.
