Firewood with spiders

I have a pile of firewood in my garage that has spiders in it. If I spray bug spray on it, will it make the wood unsafe to burn?

Spiders are your friends. They eat harmful bugs. Leave 'em be.

why spray? just get out there with broom and brush the top layer, then pick up the piece of wood gingerly by the ends and drop it on the ground a few times to shake the spideys out. then way you go. no need for nasty chemicals. Spiders gotta live, and gotta live somewhere.

Spiders save the world every day. Love them, kiss them, and call them George.

Man/Woman up. If you want to have firewood, you need to get used to having spiders around. Most are completely harmless, and you have to actually try to get bit by them.

Everyone should work to overcome irrational fear. This is an opportunity for you to realize how powerful and big you are. Knock the wood on the floor of your garage, and watch em scatter. Then they can go back to their work of killing all of the pests that eat your wood, vegis, lawn, and house.

very clever to bait the spiders onto wood so that you can kill them with fire

i think you've got this under control

    death to all spiders

read the info on the poison can. if it says something like "don't breathe this," i think you can assume you shouldn't set it on fire and breathe the smoke, either.

but here's something else to ponder: often the spiders that live in woodpiles are hobo spiders (Tegenaria agrestis). do a google image search and see if they look familiar. if they do, you must now panic. don't go rummaging in your woodpile without gloves. shake out your shoes before you put them on. step on spiders without mercy, but DON'T POISON OR TRAP THE SPIDERS.

the reason why is kind of roundabout: the best way to control hobo spiders is to allow other, bigger spiders (e.g. giant house spiders, Tegenaria gigantea) to outcompete and even prey on them. gigantea looks just like agrestis, except bigger. this time of year and on into the fall, they can be about the size of a kennedy half-dollar. those you should allow to live, if you can, but whatever poison or glue traps you use for agrestis will kill gigantea, too.
