Where can I get a really good tuna melt?

My tastes are pretty basic. I loved the ones they used to sell at QFC (grilled sourdough, tuna salad, cheddar cheese) but then they changed their tuna recipe so now it has pine nuts and onions and shit. That was like 2 years ago and I haven't been able to find a place that makes good ones ever since.

There's a tiny little convenience store that also does sandwiches near my office... I have no idea what it's called- but I work on 2nd and West Harrison in Lower QA. It's a block down from the Tully's... They are out of control delicious. Their coffee is terrible, but their deli rules so hard.

I've also been really happy with Metropolitan Market.

Or, I just make my own. I poach fresh tuna steaks in cheap beer, mash it all up with whatever I feel like adding to it (cashews and jalapeños quite often), and grill that baby up on garlic rosemary or sourdough with whatever cheese I have around- usually pepper jack, fresh mozzarella, or sharp white cheddar.

    YUM.

l usually prefer to make my own, and honestly, haven't found a tuna melt yet that blows my mind, so my apologies for not having a quality suggestion. When l make my own, l switch it up, but l like it with dill, jalapenos, S&P, and a bit of tabasco.

Grand Central (Pioneer Square, elsewhere) makes a great tuna melt.

I like the tuna melt I had at Linda's. As a bonus I could get drunk while eating it.

If you can stomach the greasy dive bar atmosphere, the Five Point makes the best tuna melt I've ever had.

Matt's in the Market makes a fancy tuna melt with lump albacore tuna and Oaxacan cheese (and about a stick of butter). Worth a visit.

Pamela's Fine Foods on 6th and Stewart!! They make everything there (except the bread?), and it's delicious.

I recommend their entire menu, actually, and it's the kind of place you feel good about patronizing. Just a little Mom-and-Pop joint. Simple and delicious! Plus you can get the biggest dill pickle you've ever seen for $1...just saying.

OK, this is a little complicated because you have to go to Ilwaco. If you find yourself in Long Beach, go to the Sportsman's Cannery and buy the solid albacore (with the black and gold label). Best canned tuna ANYWHERE and a few bucks cheaper a can than the imported Italian stuff. It's so good, you should buy a case, since when are you ever going to be back in Ilwaco?

Then--this is important--use only Best Foods mayo. And keep it local with Tillamook sharp cheddar.

Light rye is my favorite bread for tuna melts. Yum.

The Hi-Spot on 34th. Tuna, cheddar, tomato, mayo on a roll. Very, very tasty.

Make your own tuna salad and tuna melts. They will suit your own tastes far better than anything you can buy.

Personally, I love mine on Essential Bakery's rosemary diamante, with cheddar and freshly grated parmesan on top. I toast it until the parmesan turns crunchy and golden brown. Mmmm...

My tuna salad recipe is a trade secret. In fact, tuna salad recipes might be a good question topic.

I'm too afraid to have tuna melts in public. There are just so many ways it could go wrong...and it could go terribly wrong! I only make them at home.

    My favorite is:
Bumblebee tuna mixed with best foods mayo.
Butter the bread, put the mixed tuna on the bread.
    Top with tillamook cheddar cheese.
Add top bread with butter. Cook, then enjoy! Oh delicious!

Your kitchen, lazy bum. Decent loaf of bread (wheat or rye, and not bottom-shelf grocery-store brand crap), swiss cheese (imported is better, but not necessary; sharp cheddar will also work), a can of tuna (any brand ought to do; personal preference to bumblebee), mayo, chopped celery. drain tuna, then mix with mayo, celery. place on bread, top with two slices of swiss, toast to perfection.

    Simple, elegant, stuff-your-face delicious.
