Who can tell me what kind of insect this is? (Warning - pics of multi-legged creature within)

The midwest seems to surprise me every day with some insect I've never imagined before. It's like living in the rainforest, but with more homeless people. Any entomologists in the house?

That guy is a house centipede. He eats harmful insects like cockroaches and silverfish. This makes him a friend to man.

As other have said, it is a House Centipede. This creature is very common and has a wide distribution; although I never saw any of them until I moved from to Ohio. They feed on smaller insects which are typically considered pests, such as silverfish, opilones species and other arthropods which might cross its path.

These guys are often considered pests, but that is typically by people who are unfamiliar with them. I catch them (after letting my cats play with them for a little while) and take them outside. Like all centipedes, they are venomous but it is not harmful to mammals. Their venom might cause irritation, but I am not sure. I would have pull up some articles and do some reading, but you can do that by going to Google Scholar.

    Hope this helps.

See, I was going to say it's a centipede too, but Andy beat me to it.

And, well, Wikipedia knows everything about it, so what's the point now...

They just moved to Evansville, which I hear is just up the road from there.
