What brand of gasoline is best in terms of environmental/humanitarian concerns?

I know ExxonMobil denied (denies?) global warning, there are accusations against Shell for paying off soldiers that carried out human rights abuses in Nigeria... I ride my bike whenever possible and use public transportation... but when I do have to drive, what kind of gas can I feel better about buying?

Also, most gas stations are run as franchises that aren't directly owned by that particular oil company. They'll use an additive package that is prescribed by their brand, but the actual gasoline probably comes from the same place, both in terms of crude source and where it is refined. Regardless of the politics of the company on the sign.

(FYI, ExxonMobil no longer denies global warming, but they are still one of the least GLBT-friendly corporations, so that's why you shouldn't like them now)

I read somewhere (don't remember where, eep!) that BP (British Petroleum) puts more money into alternative energy research and development than any other big company, but I'm too busy right now to find you a link to prove it. Honestly it could have been one of their ads, making the information highly suspect. But I've sure felt fuzzier about them since their greenwashing, haven't you?

Sell your car and use ZipCar, but never fill the tank so then you don't need to worry about it.

Really though, if drive as little as I did before I sold my car (I pretty much used it for skiing and hiking), I wouldn't worry about it. Just get whatever is cheapest and close. It's all big evil oil.

Go watch "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" and swallow every bit whole, no salt. Then happily buy Citgo gas from 7-11, knowing that you're supporting the Bolivarian Revolution of Venezuela, and that's totally good and not bad at all so don't worry. Really, it's fine, stop reading that newspaper.

But really oil is a commodity and I don't think it will even theoretically make a damn bit of difference whose poison you buy.

I'd work on things that get people to drive less, like buying car insurance by the mile instead of semiannually. Or building density. Or a transit system.

Voting with your pocketbook is something lazy people do to feel better, and if you are lazy and only want to feel good, just pretend Hugo Chavez is a hero with no cracks in his shining armor, and don't think about it too much, and happily get your gas at 7-11. Easy.
