  2 2 Good question! Summer for me always brings with it a desire to hear older music. It can be any genre: old funky soul, R and B, arena rock, ska, etc. but is almost entirely music from the mid-60's to the (very) early 80's. Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Simon and Garfunkel, Rickie Lee Jones, Led Zeppelin, Third World, Curtis Mayfield, Santana, Heart, Roberta Flack, Desmond Dekker ... Maybe because that's what I remember listening to when I was a kid in the summer time - you know, back when summers were actually leisurely, with lots of roaming around outside. Groups of kids hanging out like herds of feral dogs. Wandering the neighborhood meant over-hearing everything your neighbors were listening to while they were outside, on porches, working on cars or working in the yard. Now I have my own summer jam playlist on my Ipod with everyone above on it and more .... MyrnaMinkoff commented over 2 years ago | Report 0 0 Not to sound all esoteric, but I think it has to do with the fact that when we were kids, we were really free in the summer-time. No school, no job, no responsibilities. And not nearly as many fearful things, as kids have nowadays, so we really could explore unfettered. I'm 38, and I am so glad I was an adolescent when I was - I grew up in the city (though it was much smaller then), and my friends and I would get booted out of the house at like 10am. We knew we could drop in at home during the day, but we weren't really obligated to go home until 6-ish. We were all relatively safe b/c the neighborhood kids ranged in ages from 5/6 to 14/16, and they knew better than to ditch the younger kids ... entirely. My life wasn't all roses and rainbows (big kids can be MEAN), but at least we had some independence. Our lives weren't planned out to the minute, and we had to rely on our wits and creativity a little more than I see kids having to do now.
