What's your soundtrack for a hot summer day?

Tom Petty seems to be the only thing I want to listen to, which I suppose isn't so bad, but I'm curious what all you've got going.

When I was a child, it was the sound of a baseball game on the radio (and the smell of the coconut tanning oil my mom used).

    Good question!

Summer for me always brings with it a desire to hear older music. It can be any genre: old funky soul, R and B, arena rock, ska, etc. but is almost entirely music from the mid-60's to the (very) early 80's. Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Simon and Garfunkel, Rickie Lee Jones, Led Zeppelin, Third World, Curtis Mayfield, Santana, Heart, Roberta Flack, Desmond Dekker ...

Maybe because that's what I remember listening to when I was a kid in the summer time - you know, back when summers were actually leisurely, with lots of roaming around outside. Groups of kids hanging out like herds of feral dogs. Wandering the neighborhood meant over-hearing everything your neighbors were listening to while they were outside, on porches, working on cars or working in the yard.

Now I have my own summer jam playlist on my Ipod with everyone above on it and more ....

i keep cool with hip hop like fresh espresso and the saturday knights mixed in with breezy summery flashbacks like crosby, stills and nash and donovan.

i've found tom petty to help out with this particular heat wave as well!
