Can avi files be transfered via flash drive?

My mother is purchasing a new mini laptop for me for my birthday, I have been using hers and I am wondering if I can upload my files without an external drive.

    Yes.

Unless they've got some sort of weird DRM, there's no difference between an avi and any other sort of file (doc, pdf, etc...). Some avis can be quite large so depending in size, quantity and the capacity of your flash drive (I'm guessing you're speaking of a thumb/jump drive) it may take multiple loads.

If you've got an absurd number of huge avis and your flash drive is 128 MB, you might have a friend who's willing to lend you an external hard drive.

If the laptop you've been using has a DVD burner you can also go that route. Then you'll have a good backup too.

In general, AVI files can be moved via flash drives, but one issue is that by default flash drives are formatted with FAT32, which has a maximum file size of 4GB. So if you have any AVIs larger than 4GB, they won't work with an off-the-shelf flash drive or memory card.

To get around this, you can reformat the flash drive with one of the file systems that support huge files. My recommendation is exFAT, which is supported by Windows 7 natively and Vista and XP as of the latest service packs. It's compact, fast, and designed for flash memory.

If you want something with better interoperability with Macs and Linux, right now NTFS is easier to read on those systems. But I expect that to change soon, and NTFS is very heavyweight in terms of space and performance.

If you think your flux capacitor can handle the jigowatts.
