    Seattle's bigger, has a higher world profile (mainly due to Nirvana, the Port and a few wealthy multinationals based here), and has a lower unemployment rate. People who live in Portland love it, but Oregon is faring even worse in this economy than Washington is (it's among the worst states in the nation, I believe), so it really wouldn't cross my mind as a destination right about now.

    Good question. Based on answers to similar questions like yours on here, I'd guess that neither one is 'better' or 'worse' than the other. I think it just depends on what interests you -and what doesn't- that holds value.
    I found that the vibe in Portland is alot more easy going, laid-back and people are alot more approachable and friendly in Portland, where Seattle is a little more 'staid'.
    Portland seems to have alot more younger, single 'working class' people where Seattle has more families and professional upper-income folks.
    I don't know much about the local government, or the politics there so I wouldn't be able to tell you what it's like there in that respect.
    I know that alot of my friends here complain about wanting to move there, so that might be a good indicator also.
    If you haven't been to Portland and are considering moving there, I suggest reading the Portland Mercury and other newspapers, Portland's craigslist and get a feel for it and go with your gut.

    Seattle Pro:
    * relatively better job economy
    * 3 hours to Portland / 3 hours to Vancouver BC
    * More woodsy and unpredictable city/neighborhood layout, lotsa urban parks, mountain views everywhere

    Seattle Con:
    * relative lack of non-bus public transit
    * relatively more expensive
    * people here are usually harder to figure out

    Portland Pro:
    * better urban planning
    * more flat, hence more bikeable
    * POWELL'S!

    Portland Con:
    * the polite "be like us or else!" vibe
    * more flat, not as pretty (Mt. Hood aside)
    * the polite "Portland is awesome! don't move here" vibe
