I don't know when it came into use but I have always thought of it as a tepid straight version of the much sexier gay term: "fuck buddy."

The first time that I heard it was when a girl and I had a talk and she said "so what are we?" and I said "fuck buddies" and she said "I don't like that... I like friends with benefits better" I said "No. fuck buddies is better, but that's okay friends with benefits doesn't roll of the tongue but whatev."
And by the way... FWB Movement? give me a break. No need to make a big deal out of it. Friends w/ benefits is a dumb name, but it describes the relationship really well.
