What is there to do in Portland, Maine?

The Young Democrats of America are flying me out to Maine this fall to help execute the GOTV phase of their opposition to the gay marriage ban coming up for a vote in that state in November. I'm going to be working campaign hours--i.e. 15 hour says--so, I'm not looking for super entailed suggestions, just suggestions on where to grab an end-of-the-day drink, a good meal, or a good place to drop by during a lunch hour or morning to check out.

    You know, as a born-and-raised Mainer, I have to say this, and many Mainers will disagree with me: Hang out in the Old Port. It's kind of the Pioneer Square of Portland (without the Cowgirl's Inc.) at night, but it's much more bearable than that sounds. There are a lot of bars, especially Three Dollar Dewey's and Gritty McDuff's. But there's also good pizza (a couple of places), good burgers (Ruby's Choice), good buffalo wings and beer (Buffalo Wings 'n Things). Also, go to Becky's Diner for breakfast. Tourists and locals go there, and it's kind of an institution.

    Make a pilgrimage to the Lobster Shack in Cape Elizabeth (which is a suburb of Portland). It's at Two Lights, which is a great place to visit just for the scenery. Two lighthouses right on the rocky shore. Even on cloudy cold days it's a beautiful spot.

    Recommended items: the lobster roll, the fried shrimp boat. But it's all very very good.

    It closes for the season at the end of October, so I hope you'll be going earlier than that.

    Whenever I'm in Portland, I end up at Bull Moose . I'm not sure why, it's not like Seattle lacks solid music stores. Old habits die hard, I guess.

    Unfortunately, my favorite place to eat there closed (RIP Granny's Burritos), and no other meal I've had in Portland has been particularly memorable. There is a decent variety of food available, at least, which can't be said of other areas of Maine (in my home town, two hours north of Portland, I don't think they've even heard of Indian food, or Greek, or Vietnamese...).

    Portland does have a First Friday Art Walk that's worth checking out, and Autumn in New England is truly breathtaking, if you get a chance to get out of the city at all.
